Open Letter To Bad Drivers

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Dec. 31, 2005

I always think about driving. I've written about it before, and I'll write about it again, given the chance. I'm bothered and irked and so on, about what I see, practically every day, on the roads. The following addresses some of the issues that I often have had on the brain as it were. The letter is addressed to the bad drivers of the world...

--------------------------

Why are you going so fast? What is so important, that you would go that fast? Everyone knows about following the flow of traffic, and that going over the limit somewhat is often the norm, but this is racecar fast, this is crazy.

Why are you tailgaiting? This is unsettling to the car in front, and to those around also, as you are at times inches away from an accident that will involve yourself and perhaps others. And why are you tailgaiting and speeding and cutting in and out of traffic like a madman at night? In rain. In snow. On ice. In heavy traffic.

If a lane is merging, do you not realize that the other cars need to come in to your lane? Either you do not, and should not have been licensed, or you do, and are refusing to let them in. What is the big deal about letting a car go ahead of you? It seems that your body has grown up, but your mind is still childish, at the most, adolescent. Get over yourself. The cars are just trying to get where they are going, as you are.

Running the yellows and reds. Green means go. Green. Green is the color of lawns. Green is the color of leaves. Green is the color of green beans. Its easy. You can get it, I know you can. This is not highbrow stuff. Maybe you are color blind.

Trucks. I must be an idealist. I thought trucks were supposed to be the guardians of the roads. I thought they were the wise ones, the ones who had seen it all. So many of them are swerving back and forth. And lane changes involve a process. You are supposed to check your mirrors and such, and indicate. If someone is beside you, and you change lanes, well, that could be a bad thing. Once again, its pretty simple.

Some other annoyances involve music, makeup, and polluting. But there are many more. Its nice that you have spent three thousand dollars on car speakers. Good for you. But its too bad everyone for miles around has to listen to your music, espescially at lights. And it is always bad music. The car is not a great place to apply makeup, or eat, or talk on the phone. Some can manage these things alright. Unfortunately everyone thinks that they are these 'some.' And to throw a coffee cup or other garbage out of your window is so low class I can't even begin to explain it.

Oh ya, and cross walks. That means you stop and the pedestrians walk. Pedestrians are those people who want to cross the road. As for parking lots, it might be a good idea to drive with some caution instead of racing through them the way you do. Just a thought.

As for the many drivers who follow the rules, and use a little common sense, well, good work. I wish there were more of you. Until then I guess I can only hope for the best, expect the worst, and keep my St. Christopher medal shining, neat, and in its place.

To all at UK and anywhere else, have a Happy New Year! May the muse visit you as often as possible. May your burden be light, and when its not, may you have well made shoes.

Many Blessings.
