Movie Review: "The Producers"

By Jack Lepiarz
Dec. 28, 2005

Featuring Uma Thurman, Matthew Broderick and the apparently "fatso," Nathan Lane, "The Producers" is a movie that is based off of a musical that is based off of a movie.

How screwy is that?

I have never seen the original movie, nor the play, so I cannot make any fair comparison to the other productions. I don't want to compare something without having seen what I'm comparing it to. I've seen that happen with people doing movie reviews of Fahrenheit 9/11 without having ever seen the movie.

Anyway The movie opens with a remarkably funny scene between Broderick and Lane as Broderick's character, Leo Bloom, has a panic attack in Max Bialystock's (Lane) office. Watching Matthew Broderick (who I originally know from "Godzilla" and "Inspector Gadget") act like a whiny, sniveling, hysterical child was incredibly funny. Then seeing Nathan Lane (who I remember most prominently from "The Birdcage") take part in a song entitled "Keep It Gay" only contributed further to the hilarity, as an entire scene revolves around various homosexual stereotypes.

Will Ferrel delivered a gut-bustingly funny performance as a "former" member of the nazi party. Prancing about flamboyantly in a black leather coat and a German helmet, Ferrel provides constant comic relief whenever he appears onstage. His adoration of the fuhrer, while a bit disturbing, when taken in good fun is very, very funny.

Like any other Mel Brooks production, this show is full of subtle racist and un-politically correct jokes, and plenty of not so subtle sex jokes. The movie "Spaceballs" was full of them, as was "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." This latest movie was no different. However, with the recent upstart in P.C. fanaticism, I am sure that there will be people accusing the movie of being sexist, racist, juvenile, homophobic, and anything else that a Mel Brooks film usually is. I hope people ignore them, because it is a very funny movie, with roles brilliantly played by their actors. If you want to criticize something, watch the previews--they're chock full of what will most certainly turn out to be box-office flops.
