Dec. 28, 2005 It is that time of year again and I will say, without a doubt, that I would like to spread some good news. First off, I would like to say that the new year offers hope. Just like everyday you wake up is a good one. In fact, if you get a tomorrow, that is even better. It can be a year of promise, a year of starting over, second chances and a chance at creating new and great relationships. I hope that world leaders stop fighting for their belief and realize that they represent the best interests of people. I hope that ethnic cleansing and genocide and murder for murder sake can become a thing of the past. I hope that the war in Iraq becomes a bridge-building exercise from here on out and that our leaders can see past politics and economic gain and try to help a people find their way in the world. I hope that the media grows a pair and begins to realize that they are there to help people stay informed, not to forward any kind of political agenda by any party. I hope that they return to unbiased reporting and bring us the news we need, not just the news that they think is important. Leave that to the feature writers and opinion people. I hope that our two political parties stop fighting and stop wasting our time and energy on partisan bickering. I hope that they can come up with realistic solutions to make our country better. I wish for my fellow Arabs to stop trying to kill our people and take a page out of the book of Ghandi. Passive resistance can be just as affective. Learn to be a protester, not a murderer. Let us all try to be better people in this new year. Cast off yesterday and old grudges and extend a hand to our imaginary enemies. Be the first to say you are sorry or admit that you had a part in what went wrong. Offer the olive branch and be the ones who work towards a better tomorrow. Peace to all in this new year. Let 2006 be the greatest year in time. We can do it. I have faith. ------------ About the author: Nicholas Olson is a long-time journalist who has been a columnist at his college newspaper and is currently a military journalist.
