Intelligent Design Or Just What God Wanted?

By Samuel Sandbaugh
Dec. 27, 2005

I read a “Detroit Free Press” editorial the other day that began: “Believing in something doesn’t make it so – or make it science. And it is about time somebody called the religious right on this simple truth.”

That is a simple truth to be sure. I keep thinking that Columbus believed the world was round and he stepped out on faith to prove his belief. I keep thinking that the Wright Brothers believed in their aircraft design and flew their own aircraft in a faith to prove their belief.

This is no different from the attitude of most Christians or those of the “religious right” who step out in faith every day to prove their belief in a living God named Jesus. It is also no different from scientists who have faith in Darwin and his theories concerning natural selection. They continually step out in faith that evolution is the real key to how humanity developed and they work their theories and publish their notes.

The Bible of the Christians says that faith is a “substance” and “evidence”. That faith in God is even exhibited by any human is an action of God. You see, faith is a gift from God and unless given by God, scriptures declare that you will not have it. Faith cannot be gained or generated out of the mind of any man.

That is why I believe any “faith” generated from the mind may content a person temporarily, but in the realm of eternity largely means very little. The “faith” that is able to move a mountain only comes from God. Human faith in the actions and theories of humans may be meaningful in the physical world at the present time. Human theories and actions are not what gains man his relationship with the eternal.

I don’t know what the scientist is afraid of. If the tenets of Darwinism have “evidence” that would allow an inconsideration of God’s existence and hand in the creation of all things, then that evidence should be weighed, examined, and tested. I see no problem with that.

It isn’t really fair though to take the improvable and erratic findings of evolutional science and call these things fact, while rejecting the argument of the possibility of a God that tells mankind exactly how he did create everything. Teachers and judges and scientists bend over backwards to render explanations on creation based on what they believe. They say they believe based on printed theory and observation.

These same teachers, judges and scientists will not even permit a contrary explanation and we have to question why. They might say that it is injecting religious faith where it isn’t allowed. That isn’t exactly fair. There are millions of children who attend public schools that come from religious homes that ascribe to the history of creation. Why aren’t these public schools permitted to display and speak in support of students who may already know of God and the history of creation? Why are public schools permitted to ignore and disparage an entire segment of their student population by suggesting Darwin is the only explanation for human existence?

Perhaps until it is all worked out and Darwin is proven to be factual, all students should be taught Darwinian Evolution at home or in their church. Perhaps Darwinian Evolutional Theory should not be part of the Public School Curriculum either. If Intelligent Design and the history of creation must be relegated to the churches as simply a non-scientific and improvable theory, then it is not unreasonable to ask that science withdraw Darwin from that same classroom.

I am not saying science should not be taught. If taught correctly, science will allow students to develop their own thoughts on matter and existence. They do not need to be told what to think based on the theories of others. They can take proven scientific studies in biology, chemistry, and even archaeology to determine what they will accept and reject.

In truth, Evolutional Theory is a product of atheistic thought. Since there is no God then we still need an explanation that counters Christian truth. So Evolution is simply a faith exhibited by atheism. If one of the central beliefs of Christians is not to be permitted in the public arena, I believe the same should hold true for one of the central faiths of atheism.
