Dec. 26, 2005 Two years ago, I purchased a five dollar fiber optic Yule tree at the dollar store at a half price after x-mas sale. I had decided that I would do something different and actually put up a tree the following year. My now ex-hubby has a stroke just before the holiday the following year so the tree sat in my closet for another year. The Yule tree made it out of the closet this year. The fiber optic lights are great. I don't have to worry about fancy decorations. I have a few half price dollar store x-mas hung on the tree. The star is way too big for the tree but it looks pretty all by itself. That sparkling little tree makes me smile every time I look at it. It's not going back into the closet before New Years. It's staying up until the eve of January 6 th. I've written a letter to St. Nicholas but I've also written a letter to La Befina who is the female version of Santa. La Befina is an Italian Crone who had the three wise men as guests in her home. She opted not to travel with them missed seeing the babe in the manger. Now she flies around on a broom, filling the stocking of boys and girls with gifts. Good little children get chocolate chip cookies and sugar plums. Naughty little children get garlic and coal. Santa delivers on December 25 while Befina delivers on January 6 th. The gifts I gave are a few well selected hand crafted gifts. I pulled small pebbles out the Greenbrier River for a set of WomanRunes for my best friend in California. Various friends received Dreamcatchers with tobacco prayer ties made by me. I also have homemade essential oils made from plants that I harvested in the wild. Most of the gifts I seek are not of the material world. The one gift I received was a holiday candle from my future daughter-in-law. The best gift is her loving my son. Another gift is my younger son in recovery from drug addiction. He is spending the holiday in Washington State with his father's family. My step-son is going to California to be in the IBEW Electrician's Apprenticeship Program. He is finally on the path to making his mark in the adult conspiracy, The answer to my prayers is for my sons to do well. Those prayers are being answered. Yule is the celebration of Winter Solstice. It is the darkest day of year but the light begins to grow stronger. Christmas is honoring the birth of the babe in the manger who is the light of the Christian World. Originally, Christmas was a season rather than just one day. I have decided to celebrate the season rather than just the day. The Yule tree stays up for another twelve days. The candle that I received from my soon to be daughter-in-law is lit and going in my medicine bowl. This bowl is something that I hand crafted out of birch log years ago. I write down areas that need healing and toss it in my medicine bowl thought out the year. For the Season, each day, I hold the candle and thank the creator for the gifts through out the year. As the flame flickers, I focus on the areas of darkness that need healing. Financial realities are always an issue. I am comfortable with alone, but Santa baby, why don't you peel off that red suit and give me a smothering "Ho Ho Ho!" I want a man. Hey Befina, Can we kick that fat fairy in the rump? I wouldn't mind sending Mr. Grinch to give psyche fleas to the workplace bullies at previous place of employment. What about a ticket to El Paso, Texas! A permanent move would be even nicer. Hello Unitarian Universalistic Church and sunshine. Good-bye bigot belt and snow. Let those with Jim Crow mentalities take a flying whoopee in a rolling bagel. That would be an entertaining sight to see. Santa is awesome but La Befina rocks. It takes a woman to get the job done right. Epiphany is the day that follows the twelve days of Christmas. This is the day that honors the coming of the three wise men who followed the star. Astrologers are my heroes. I follow planets as well as stars. I am asking the Creator to show my very own light to follow . Have a Merry Yule Time Season, Old Christmas now that new Christmas has passed.
