Dec. 26, 2005 That peanut butter and jelly combination spread and a range of other sandwich toppings may taste better if applied to a slice of white bread and frequent consumers of wheat bread or whole grains might say such things also taste good if placed on their favourite type of bread, but could the consumption of too much white bread be bad for those consume it? According to a recent study from Tufts University in Boston, that white bread goes to one’s stomach which later turns into fat. In addition, white bread is a bigger contributor to a larger waistline than say alcohol, sweets, meat and even potatoes. Leader of the study and associate professor of nutritional epidemiology at Tufts University in Boston, Katherine Tucker, and her team studied 459 healthy middle aged people in Baltimore, Maryland. It was found that although the subjects had a variety of eating habits, the team studied five different diets in which one kind of food was at the top: healthy food, white bread, alcohol, sweets, meat and potatoes. It was noted that the people who consumed the most white bread were the fattest. Apparently and according to the same study, calories from refined grains settle at the waistline which adds half an inch a year to those who consume white bread. In fact, by the time the study was over, those who consumed white bread had gained three times more weight in the stomach as opposed to their peers who ate whole grains. This is a serious matter, for it has also been noted that people who have bigger waistlines have a higher chance of heart disease than those whose weight is similar to theirs but don’t have the extra weight in their bellies. It’s never too late to utilise the measuring tape. It’s your health and your heart at stake.
