The Working Man Has No Chance In Retail Chain America

By Bob D. Caterino
Dec. 24, 2005

If we think about it we are not the highest members on the food chain, in fact we are probably the lowest. Oh, sure we are not going to be eaten by squirrels or chipmunks. We however might be eaten by a lion or even a tiger but we have no worries living in the civilized world, or do we?

I conducted my own survey and the results are in. What we had to fear back in the forties and fifties was indeed fear itself but now we have a new predator on our path to extinction and that would be the yuppie bosses.

I focused on huge corporations, mostly retail and what I found was the food chain is still alive and well. I talked to the employees of two major retail home improvement chains and what I found was repulsive and a discredit to what they say they stand for. Many of those hired were told it was a great place to move up the ladder. The employees there are given a chance to use there skills to move into upper management but those I have talked to were at a stand still and been working for these chains for three years or better.

Nepotism is also a part of the new world order in these chains. If you are a friend or a click you have an in but if you are the regular Joe or Joy then you have nothing.

The people doing the hiring seem to focus on those that have more then have not. What I mean by that is people in need of work to support their families stay in the menial jobs but those that are good looking and know someone are slipped right into the higher positions.

I couldn't believe the things I was hearing so I took this one step further and took the test they were giving to be hired and passed with flying colors. I told the manager I had over twenty five years as a skilled worker in the electrical field and that I would be happier in a management position in the electrical department. Needless to say I was hired and placed in the delivery department. It seems that if I was to be placed into the department that I was skilled in then they would have to pay the rate for my knowledge. So, ok, I was hauling side by side refrigerators, sometimes ten or twelve a day. When the company policies strictly state that two men are to be on a truck I found myself alone in the world lifting these heavy objects. I let this slide for a few weeks then asked management if I can have a helper. You need a manager to sign off the appliances on the truck and sometimes this took more then a half an hour. Then asked later what took me so long. Then they would show me a chart. The chart derailed how long an appliance delivery should take. I defended myself to the best of my ability but they didn't really want an answer they just needed to be “The boss“. They told me they were short handed and I got a deliberate “NO.” I continued to do this heavy hauling myself on and off for a few weeks when I noticed something was amiss in the place I was working. The job postings were just not there but when a job did open up in another department the little guy couldn't put in for it. It seems that management had that under their thumb also. They would take a friend or someone less qualified for these positions and hand feed them into the job. The regular shmucks had no chance for improvement.

Now to the little people in these positions I found that we were treated like garbage. No matter who made the mistake in any department the smaller worker got the blame. This is where I took a stand. When I told someone in upper management that I did some articles for the New York Times and smaller papers they approached me for a higher position. I told them to take a hike and walked out.

I wont say who I was hired by but this company is the Lowest of the lows. The answer is simple, own your own business and that's the bottom line. There is no hope for the little people in America and it seems that the hard workers of this country are needed to be left doing the hard work. The others are floating right along doing what they do best, clicking away.

We are taught at an early age that starts in grammar school about the click. The ones left out of these clicks are called names and usually the outcasts. I know this was a long step to take to write an article but I felt there was a need to do this. By the way, while doing this asinine thing I brought a whopping one hundred and seventy dollars a week. This is just a no win situation for blue collar America and I hope that one person would see this and do something about it. One can only hope and pray before it is too late. Lowe’s Home Improvement should be ashamed of themselves and try at the least to be more employee friendly. There I said there name. Oops, my bad.
