One Way Of Staying Thin

By Judy Ramsook
Dec. 23, 2005

One day while I was waiting in line at a retail outlet to pay for something, looking ahead of me as the customers made their purchases and left, a woman behind me was making observations of her own.

She was pointing out to me some of the people in the line who were married, she could tell they were just from looking at their physical appearance. She said such things like, ‘you can tell that guy’s married, he looks well fed,’ or ‘you can tell she’s also married, she looks settled down enough.’ Thinking nothing of it at the time, I humoured her and moved along.

Today I found some information that seems to support the woman’s observation. According to researchers at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo, women who live in families that consist of four people or more are more likely to become overweight as opposed to some women who live alone.

Furthermore, during the study, researchers interviewed 274 women when it was noted that 47.8 percent of them were obese. Their body mass index was 30, but of the women who were overweight, it was found that 64.8 of those women lived with a family of four or more while 32.5 percent lived alone or are single.

The obesity trend seems more common in low income women in large families who have less than a high school education and partial parental support. James Rohrer, leader of the study also states that it is not clear why large families run the risk of becoming obese. One other observation is that larger households have a greater amount of food available.
