Dec. 21, 2005 As a born and raised American citizen, I am baffled by the unscrupulous nature of the world of politics. I am not contented by one side or the other in the political realm. One pretends to be about the interest of the citizens while the other is doing everything it can to make sure that we are reminded of the society of the "haves" and the "have nots." Yesterday it was revealed to what levels those elected into power are given luxury for their loyalty. Members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, are being handed expensive meals, VIP treatments at resorts and luxury accommodations all the while the people they are supposed to represent try to make ends meet. In other words, we are being screwed so that the corporations we work for can keep raking in the profits at our expense. America was not intended to be a place where you would compete for work from the outside, where manufacturing jobs were sent overseas or people who have degrees in engineering or science would not be able to find a job. There are airline mechanics that went to school to make sure our aircraft met the highest of standards only to watch 40 percent of their jobs be sent to foreign locations. Highly-trained craftsmen and workers should be able to work in their trade, right? And who can we complain to? The likes of Congress? They are more interested in staying in power or subverting a system of checks and balances then they are about making sure Americans have the jobs it takes to keep an economy going. I am reminded of the saying I heard about tax breaks and income. Does it matter if you get a tax cut if you don't have a job? I also hate to think that I would become anti-corporation because I can no longer trust companies to give a care about the Americans who work for them. I have heard it said by many a Republican that this is a land of opportunity where anyone, with enough effort, can make it. That is a load of crap. Only some will truly ascend to the levels of millionaires and rarely do they come from backwoods shacks or trailer parks. No, advantaged lives lead to their families having advantaged lives. These are the people that can send their kids to the best schools and give them the best opportunities. People in the lower class can't even give their kids the proper nutrition let alone an Ivy League education. What sickens me the most is when I hear the privileged Congressmen whine and pout about justice being served upon them. When the likes of Tom DeLay cry foul because their inappropriate behavior finally bites them in the ass, I say it is about time. DeLay is a slimeball and used his position and influence to not help out his congressional district but to make a better life for himself and help out his buddies. In the coming mid-term elections, I hope more honest, decent candidates step to the plate. Those that do not need $30,000 golf vacations disguised as "fact-finding trips." I hope we get those that want real, positive change in government. One that will not only balance the budget and pay down our debts but makes sure that every American, regardless of social standing, gets the opportunities afforded citizenship. If one wants to see what influence will get you in this country, just take a look at our current administration and our Congress. I point a finger at all politicians and say "What are you doing for every American?" I know it sounds romantic but it should be what we all are asking. This is a government set up for the people, not just a select few. It was never intended to suppress but lift up. The will of the people should be to take care of others, ours first, and make sure we set a good example for the world. On that we are failing. I can only hope that it is not too late.
