Enjoy Yourself, But Be Careful Out There

By Judy Ramsook
Dec. 20, 2005

I do not recall a time in my life when I have not been in control of my actions, for although I do partake in the occasional alcoholic beverage, I have not consumed anything to such a degree as to induce a state of delirium.

I feel that if something other than one’s own sober and sound decision making process has to influence some one into behaving a certain way, much like the way a substance or too much consumption of a beverage could, then something is very wrong.

Do not get the mistaken impression here, there is nothing wrong with having fun or enjoying oneself in the company of friends or family members, but when it comes to something else such as a consumed substance or drink taking control of one’s behaviour and actions, is what I think is really thought provoking.

For example, if some one performs an undesirable action while he or she is under the influence of some substance or beverage that can have dire consequences, but at the same time made the consumer of such a substance or drink feel as if he/she were on some euphoric journey and as a result becomes unaware of his deed, that in itself can be provocative enough.

I understand why some people will want a brief escape from the harsh reality of life sometimes, but to allow a substance or drink to take over one’s inhibitions and behaviour is something I will not fully comprehend.

It feels good to be in control of one’s actions and as the year draws to a close with all the festive food and drink available, be careful with how much of that drink or substance you consume. It can make all the difference between performing an action one will regret or not. Or if you happen to witness a friend heading in the over consumption category, encourage him or her to take it easy, he or she might be grateful that you did long after the day is through.

We want you all here safe and aware come January 2nd 2006. Enjoy yourself and the festivities but also be careful out there.
