I'm Goin' To College

By Jack Lepiarz
Dec. 20, 2005

"Dear Jack:

"On behalf of the Admission Committee, I am pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Emerson College for September 2006. We believe that your impressive academic performance and accomplishments make you a perfect addition to our program in Broadcast Journalism. Congratulations!"

Thank God!

Though this letter took it's time getting here (I had friends who got it three to four days ago), I am nonetheless relieved and elated that, finally, I know where I'm going to be for the next four years. That shadow of uncertainty--whether I should start new applications, whether I should start talking to teachers about more recommendations, etc.--has been lifted. I can relax knowing that, come September, I will be living and studying in my first choice of colleges. I will have the opportunity to meet new people, while strengthening friendships with friends from Madison who are going there as well.

But anyway, more on this college of my dreams. Emerson College, located in the Theatre District of Boston, Massachusetts, across the street from the Boston Common, and just a few blocks away from Fenway Park. Mostly an arts school, it centers around acting, writing, film, and, my personal choice, journalism. Jay Leno and Brown both are Emerson Alumni, as well as one of the clowns from the Big Apple Circus, who helped give me some more in-depth insight into Emerson (Thanks, Barry).

So now I've got about a hundred school days left. About six months of studying, all the while knowing that I can finally get out of town. For those of you that have experienced this, you that it is an extraordinary feeling. For those of you who don't, I'll explain: This feels like a gigantic weight of worry has just been lifted off of me. I don't feel bubbly and jump-for-joy excited, but instead content and serene. I know what I want to do, and now I can.

For those of you who are wondering, it's true that I'm pursuing a career in broadcasting, and not in writing. Not even acting (which many people believed that I would). While I will continue to write for the rest of my life (I hope), I would rather go with a career a bit more stable--like media.

In conclusion, I'd like to thank the Admissions Department at Emerson, and wish the Emerson Class of 2010 good luck.
