Dec. 19, 2005 2005 has almost come to an end. Time to look back at the first year of President Bush´s second term. It has not been a good year for him. His popularity has sunk dramatically. He has been confronted with scandals, disasters, accusations of secret CIA flights combined with tortures of prisoners and ghosts from the past (the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction of which he finally admitted himself they have never been there and that his information in this was wrong yesterday. Something the whole world had already known for years). How did he handle all this? Seen the fact most Americans don´t trust him anymore as far as Iraq is concerned and his low rates in polls in general not too well. The reason is quite simple: George Bush is too stubborn and sticks to his own ideals and ideas too much. Even when they´ve proven to be false. One can keep on continuing like an ostrich, putting the head in the sand and pretending one doesn´t see it, but that´s not what this world needs. What would be the message for 2006? President Bush must take concrete steps to show the world he´s the strong leader he claims to be. Not by keep on talking about the axe of evil, the war on terrorism and that because of these two subjects everything is allowed and that there can be no discussion about it. No, Instead of pretending he´s the though guy, President Bush should have to acknowledge more the difficulties in international politics and come with solutions other than a war threat. I realise it´s easy for me to talk. Hey, I´m not President of the USA. George Bush is and has to act like that. When America wants to spread democracy, it has to give the just examples, a route for the path the world has to follow. We haven´t been given them by the Bush government in 2005. Hopefully they´ll come to light in 2006. I wish you all the best for the new year. ------------ About the author Johan Peters: I'm a freelance journalist/editor from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
