Yin And Yang

By Stan Grimes
Dec. 19, 2005

Merry Christmas. Yes, I am an atheist and saying Merry Christmas is not beneath my dignity. I think though that Christmas is only a speck of sand in the hourglass of life. One should celebrate one’s existence every day of the year. I say this because everyday of our existence is precious. If you don’t believe me ask Argile Stox, who just experienced a heart attack. His articles are descriptive and very accurate I think, and they describe what a person feels when going through a life-altering experience.

Those of us alive on Christmas have much for which to be thankful. We could be one of the over thirty thousand dead Iraqi women, men, and children lying beneath the desert floor of Iraq spoken of so eloquently by Nicholas Olson in a previous article. We should be thankful we are not loved ones of the over two thousand Americans, who have lost their lives on a foreign land. No, no, you’re not going to hear another Grimes diatribe against the useless battle. Not now. It is a time for thoughts of inner peace. It is time for discovering the balance between our yin and yang.

Useless-Knowledge itself is going through a discovery of sorts, trying to find its niche in the internet world. That is good. Some have voiced resistance to U-K’s inevitable change. I say inevitable because all things must change to grow. Don't believe me? Just ask a green bean. A green bean changes in many ways before it becomes that darling green vegetable everyone loves. Useless-Knowledge too must evolve from seedling to edible literature. My hats off to those columnists behind the scenes working on this evolution and to the editor for recognizing the need for change.

To say that humankind must also make a truce between their yin and yang would be an understatement, but I leave that well enough alone. It is my hope we have many years on U-K to toss those yin and yang ideas around. If we didn’t disagree on anything, it wouldn’t be worth the effort to write. It would be an ugly world if everyone agreed.

Merry Christmas
