American Dreamcatcher

By Bonijean Isaacs
Dec. 18, 2005

September 11, 2001 was like a bad movie that turned real. Thousands of people in airplanes, at work in their office and places of business, military and federal workers; family members, friends and neighbors lost their lives because of senseless acts of terrorism. It was much like Kennedy assassinations, most folks remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news.

On that day, I was a home care provider for a lady in a wheelchair. I had walked in the door when my client told me the news. We both watched the events on television in shock and disbelief. The estimated number of people dead equaled the population of Greenbrier County , West Virginia. This is the community that we reside in. When I got home from work, a fellow priestess called and told me that we needed to do a ceremony. I called the local pagans , told them to meet at my house and bring swords. We gathered in the back yard, We built a fire and stuck the swords standing in the in the ground and making an inner circle surrounding the fire to honor our fallen citizens in the United States and beyond. We prayed to the creator to give wisdom to our President. We asked that the spirit of the victims be released to the loving care of the creator and peace for the families. We asked for swift justice to those responsible for the tragedy. We built a cone of energy to release to the cosmos.

Afterwards, some folks were discussing the fact that all the red, white and blue ribbons in town were sold out. I drove to Wal-Mart. I was able to find plenty of red, white and blue yarn, feathers and beads. . I gathered willow branches from the trees growing by the Greenbrier River. Soon I made enough Red, White, and Blue dream catchers to give everyone in our circle. I gave dream catchers to my clients and friends. Some people wanted to give me money for them but I told them no, I will not exploit the tragedy of these people. If they wanted to make a donation to help the victims that would be fine with me. I sent red white and blue dreamcatchers to our elected officials and even the President.

Native American legend has it that the dreamcatcher catches the good dreams in the web and lets the bad ones move through. The good dreams then float through the web and down the feather to the sleeper below. The American Dreamcatcher is the hope that meaning of the of the red, white and blue colors will prevail. White is purity and innocence Red is hardiness and valor Blue is vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

A few days later, I was able to lead women inmates in a ceremony as a volunteer minister at the local prison. We merged the flames of red, white and blue candles into one to bring the energy of courage, integrity and steadfastness to our own lives and beyond. As long as I can make dreamcatchers, the American dream will prevails.
