Dec. 17, 2005 Conservatives and Republicans are breaking their arms by patting themselves on the back. They are so excited that Iraqis, under heavy security, have finally voted. The thunder of their drums is resounding off the roadsides of the Beltway circling that glorious District of Columbus. Let us hope the war hawks’ drums aren’t just beating to the beat of more war. Democracy in Iraq does not mean peace. Americans have proven that theory. Democracy means war, four of them in this writer’s lifetime, all in the name of protecting our security, all cloaked in the words “altruism” or “nationalism.” No Liberal or Democrat has said, “democracy is wrong in Iraq.” Republicans would lead a nation of sheep to believe otherwise. Liberals have simply said, “we need to get out of Iraq. Liberals and Democrats simply said, “we were deceived in going to war.” Our current leaders in the Whitehouse tell us that pulling out of Iraq would devastate the process of democracy in Iraq. That idea can be compared to the lover, who tells his mate before making love he is wearing protection (we have WMDs in Iraq), in the middle of lovemaking he tells her otherwise (gee, no WMDs). When she asks him to stop (pull out the troops), he says I can’t it will ruin our orgasm. Iraq can very well survive without American troops. How many foreign troops were on our soil when America broke away from England? France is the only country that significantly came to our aid. Strangely enough, France is the blunt of a great deal of hostility from our far right. Why, because they were the smart ones? Conservatives are so eager to call anyone opposing their viewpoints, “liars.” Where I come from, calling someone a liar is usually the beginning of a fistfight. It is confrontational, meaningless, and nonproductive to continue the barrage of “liar, liar, your pants are on fire” arrows slung by the right. Reasonable and logical conversation just seems more useful.
To give credit where credit is due. The Republicans should be proud of America’s Secretary of State. Condi Rice has done more in a year than Colin did in four. Liberals have not been slam-dunking her with slander. Liberals “do” recognize brains where brains exist. Just so happens none exist currently in Washington D.C.
