Medium, Well Done Or Rare?

By Judy Ramsook
Dec. 17, 2005

I always thought that if one went to a restaurant and ordered a steak lunch or dinner, it was customary of the waiter/waitress to ask how you, the customer would like to have such steak cooked.

But upon a recent visit to such a restaurant when I ordered the steak dinner, the waiter did not ask how I wanted it cooked. Now I don’t know if the waiter was psychic, maybe he was and already knew how I would have preferred to have my steak prepared, so thinking nothing of it at the time, I made do with the appetizer and the cheerful company I was with, and all was going well.

That is up until the time my entrée made it to my side of the table. Of course it looked fine on the surface, but upon cutting into the portion of beef, I happened to glance at the side of the piece I had cut. Blood was not dripping out of it, but it did look unsettling enough, maybe a little more red than pink.

So knowing the vengeful nature of humans, I did not wish to have it returned for fear that the waiter or cook, in a moment of wickedness, might have decided to place some of his/her saliva on it or probably something more of a thought provoking nature. So I ate some of it and left the rest.

What makes this matter so shocking to me was that in all my days of dining out, I had not encountered a waiter/waitress who did not ask that all too familiar question. How would you like your steak, medium, well done or rare? After ordering it, of course. And the only reason I have decided to mention the name of the restaurant in this piece is because I will probably not set foot in another one of its many branches ever again. The restaurant? The Outback Steakhouse.
