Dec. 16, 2005 After sixty-six years of life among the living, where I stand on Christmas is that I still really enjoy the old-fashioned Christmas music. The old familiar Christmas music doesn't ever go out of style. It blows the fire of human spirit hot enough to make even hard nails in the fire become soft and glowing golden. Old Ebeneezer Scrooge was one such tough old nail. Charles Dickens' famous story about this old man's transformation is still relevant. Nevertheless, a person is still expected to make a living, and a few people not only make a living, they become rich like E. Scrooge. Despite this, and the hardness of many rich people, the spirit of Christmas blows a hot wind and makes the heart softer like the heart of the Grinch that grew bigger and bigger in the famous Dr. Seuss cartoon. Oh well, you might say these examples are nothing but fantasies. But the Christmas spirit truly is real. Many people still feel it! But a hard skeptic might not feel it. A hard skeptic well even might damn a poor person to suffer without any assistance, because the poor person isn't carrying his load and paying his taxes. Some might say that when it comes to a feeling, such as the Christmas spirit, well that is just a "subjective" experience. The skeptics can argue against such "subjective" experiences, and writing for U-K there are a number of vocal skeptics. Some of them are very keen and very intelligent! But still, such keen-ness is only in the realm of intellect, and thought, and rational argument. To keep in touch with reality we need to keep this point in mind. Warm emotions and empathy burn in a different realm from cold reason. Like the famous Olympic flame, the flame of spirit inspires many a strong person to perform at top level. Even if you are a skeptic, I still want to wish you a happy holiday season. I still wish you a merry Christmas. The words are a cliché. The warm emotions are also a cliché. So what's wrong with clichés? Each breath you take is a cliché your body speaks. Each heartbeat is a repeat of the statement your body made just before. At Christmastime, humanity affirms the steadfastness of last year's mental and physical determination to keep on the upbeat and take care of those who are less fortunate than we are. Because of this, many Christian people reach out and help others whenever they can. A writer may do no more than add wings to the famous cliché of Christian charity. But so many other writers have written much better on this subject than I can. Even so, there is still the subjective spirit, the subjective heat, the subjective fire, and the subjective light. Then there is the mighty Blacksmith who keeps on beating the softer more golden souls into a radiant shape. As long as my heart is still beating, I will stick to my guns. Logical or not, when I am no longer subjective, I will no longer be here on Earth among the living. I will no longer be myself, offering freely my gifts to whomever is interested. The skeptics are wasting their strength and their breath on a thankless enterprise, because rather than filling radio waves or bandwidth with voices denouncing the antiquated idea of God and the Holy Spirit, they should be supporting the new science of peak emotions and super-achievement by contributing a ten percent monthly tithe. Tearing down the old pre-scientific social structure without building the new scientific social structure is the wrong approach. Merry Christmas! ------------ About the author: John L.
