Dec. 14, 2005 When you were growing up maybe a few uncontrollable occurances took place. Like maybe you inadvertently broke a family heirloom, ornament or dish. Something for which you were severly chided. But say now you are much older with a niece or nephew. Say one of whom happens to also break or damage something the family considers valuable. But before reacting, you suddenly recall the severe scolding you received upon performing a similar act when you were much younger. And your descendent before you is looking at you with already tearful eyes upon the impending scolding he or she knows he will soon receive. What do you do? Will you choose to make a difference by being compassionate and say something like accidents do happen, but be more careful next time around. The broken item can be mended. Or will you scold him or her the same way you were? As the matter circles itself in your mind, you probably think to yourself why make the young one before you feel so bad about himself that it ruins his or her entire day? So, instead of doling out a scolding, you have decided to choose the other route. The route that can make all the difference. So you tell the young one the item can be mended and set about the business of cleaning up the bit of mess that was brought about by the piece of damaged goods. And you also smile to yourself, for you have observed something else as well. You have noticed how happy your niece or nephew is as he or she resumes playing with his or her toys. All because you chose to make a difference in that individual’s life. Something which might be lacking in most of today’s self absorbed population. And all it takes is a little time to think before one acts, for sometimes, it is not always easy to make a difference in some one’s life. So when you have realised that you have and also see the end result, is when you also notice something else as well; you made a difference because you chose to do just that. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
