Tookie Williams Got The Punishment He Deserved

By Craig Chamberlain
Dec. 13, 2005

It's quite sad that a man who brutally murdered four people, and never showed an ounce of remorse for his crimes, became a celebrity cause in his last days. Tookie Williams, as we all know by now, founded the notorious crips gang. In 1979 he murdered a convience store clerk and three motel workers.

Supporters of Tookie (they really aren't death penalty opponents. Can you imagine them oppossing the execution of a conservative?) say that he had redeemed himself from his crimes. They weren't saying he was innocent, they just wanted his sentence commuted so he could keep writing his books that no one read. Ironically most of his supporters never doubted his guilt even though he proclaimed his innocence to the end.

A little note on redemption. In order to make up for your crimes you have to give restitution. You can't give restitution to dead people. All the anti gang books in the world won't bring those four people back. And let's face it. Most people don't change. The only reason he wasn't killing people after 1981 was because he was in prison. He went into prison a killer and died a killer.

Tookie williams was rightly executed to pay for his crimes. And Governor Scharzenegger righlty let that execution go on. Let's hope that we have fewer Tookies in the future, and that they don't become celebrity causes.
