Guestbook? Why Bother

By Judy Ramsook
Dec. 9, 2005

I used to think the importance of having a guestbook on one’s website was so that visitors to that site could leave a message indicating that they had indeed been there. But after spending more than two hours just deleting incoherent junk messages about products I have not and probably will not ever use, I figured why do I need to have this guestbook on here?

Especially if some computerized automated system is leaving a bunch of words that can’t even form a proper sentence about such products like viagra, cialis, something called adipex, phentermine and other things or companies such as forex.

Because if a real live person were doing such a thing, you would think he would want whatever message that he is placing on the site’s guestbook, to be understood. Another thing that really annoyed me was some visitors to the site had left some complimentary and courteous messages there, but those had been somehow replaced by those junk pieces of messages too. They could not be found.

And just to give the guestbook a chance after emptying it of all the above mentioned contents, I left it on the site at that time, only to discover less than two minutes later that it was again being bombarded with such messages. So thinking that there would be no end to this type of problem, I thought why not simply get rid of the guestbook feature.

So I did, just in case some of you happen to visit my publishedauthors site and see there is no guestbook feature on there. And now you also know why it’s no longer there. Whenever I visit some one’s website and choose to leave a message, I try to be as polite and courteous as I can be. I just thought others would exercise the same type of courtesy, but I guess I was wrong.
