Dec. 7, 2005 It all started the day I watched a friend play Super Mario Bros. on the 8 bit Nintendo video game system. And when I witnessed all the running and jumping the Mario character did, plus pouncing on enemies in an attempt to defeat them, and defeat them he did, I thought, I could try this, it looks like fun. But once that Nintendo controller was placed in my hand, it was a whole different game. First, as fast as I would try to make Mario run and jump, he would die because I had not grown accustomed to the buttons on the controller yet. Needless to say, it was embarrassing, especially if there happened to be seasoned video game players in the room. Then after spending some quality time with the video game system, I finally did get used to the controller and the running and jumping. Then came another challenge. Getting Mario to jump all the way to the top of the flagpole at the end of each level. This was not something you had to master, but if you wanted a higher score at the end of the level, this was one of the ways to achieve that. And eventually I got the hang of that too, sometimes making it to the top of the mentioned flagpole and sometimes again halfway. Those sound effects were interesting to hear too, even the background music that became kind of an annoyance after a while was something of a fascinating thing to hear the first few times you heard them. Then there were those question marked boxes Mario would hit for extra coins and mushrooms, hitting those was fun too. Even though it took a few tries to get to the last level of the game, I managed to reach there too, ultimately beating Bowser and rescuing the Princess. Then came the type of game that did not contain any fast paced running and jumping action, the RPGs. And that folks, is how I became a video game player, and even though the 8 bit Nintendo system didn’t make its debut until 1983, I didn’t play it until 1992. Now and a few video game systems later, I still pop the running and jumping game into the respective game system and thumb those buttons away as Mario or Donkey Kong run and jump in their quest to save the day. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
