Dec. 5, 2005 Was
it necessary for you to be so nasty in your article
challenging my
views on Christmas Trees?
Are you familiar with, “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”? Perhaps you hoped for the oft asserted bunk from some on the Right that liberals are wussies? After I wrote an article about not opposing Christmas, you wrote an article calling atheists dark destroyers of Christmas, and predicted that we'd [atheists] all be begging for charity next year. I have no idea if you are a boozer or not, but some of your articles imply that you write them drunk or while under the influence of some chemical in your brain not generated by your own body. An insult, if you like - something you are fairly familiar with [see below]. Do
you deny Fascism, Communism and Atheism have failed to
excite the
peoples of the world the way Christianity has? In your
own words
Atheists can’t even get themselves organized, and they
don’t have a
their own Christmas Tree.
I deny that they are linked in the manner oft implied. I agree that fascism fails to excite many people, as you'd agree that having your nuts hooked up to a car battery would cause you to scream. Why the nonsensical straw-man argument if not to link fascism with atheism? I accept that modern mixed economies are happy places to live is due almost directly to socialist philosophy. Finally, I'm glad that tentative movements are underfoot to try and herd atheist cats into a political force. Hey, it took the religious Right 30 years before they could infest the Republican party. Maybe it will take us that long to have any real influence. And when we do, you can thank your own affiliations – you made us, Ken Hughes, in the same way that you and yours have made every group that opposes you politically. As for not having our “own” tree, I'm not sure what you mean. Jesus never hung eggs from an Easter tree, or anything from any tree, right? You like Christmas trees, yet you claim you aren't a Christian, right? Why don't you have your “own tree”? Why the nonsensical arguments? You aren't defending anything, you are merely attacking that which you see as politically advantageous for you to attack. How easy to lump atheists in with commies, and how handy to squeeze in separation of church and state issues around the holidays, when people just want to hang up lights and enjoy. Your grammar and spelling are certainly no indication, but me thinks you are a clever guy, Ken Hughes; immoral and unenlightened, but shrewd... It’s
not just Christmas and Christmas Trees you people
hate. It’s everything
American. Freddy you’re wrong I don’t love you, I pity
you but I don’t
love you.
“You people”? First it was Indians, then women, then blacks, then gays and now atheists? Is that the new conservative position? This is a statement of tolerance on your part? After I write an article about my atheist complete with Christmas tree, and after you accept my claim that atheists are not much alike, you still lump us together as a unit? That is an intellectually stupid and shallow position to hold, but it's certainly good red-meat politics. The “hate everything American” bit is pretty funny – remember when you thought I was Canadian? Will your “side” of whatever fence you want to talk about, religious, political, economic, ever realize that the other half of America on the other side of the various fences are also Americans? Bill Maher did a pretty funny bit this season about Americans “flip-flopping” on the war. The skit was dressed up as a political ad campaign. Anyway, it charged Americans as waffling on their war position and ended up saying, “Americans - bad for America!” I
can’t tell you how many times someone has contacted me
because of one
of your rants. They tell me after reading one of your
article they
can’t imaging anyone else being so intolerant.
Yeah, I get those kinds of emails too. As a matter of fact, I get the most responses from articles such as the one I'm writing now. Anyway, I know you love the attention – any press is good press, right, so to speak? So I've gone through some of your various articles and pulled out bits which exemplify your “tolerance”, I've taken the liberty of bolding some of the more interesting bits. These are out of context almost by definition because I don't have the space or the time to provide larger sections, but each is a link, so the context is there for anyone wishing to take a closer look: “Articles should be to inform, not to degrade, and disrespect others, unless of course you write for the New York Times.” Here are some recent ones:
“On their smartest day, Liberals aren’t as smart as
Conservatives on
their dumbest day. Conservatives keep quiet and
perform. Liberals can’t
shut up and do nothing. “
And here are some classics:
“It's not politically correct to disagree with a
liberal. That would be
akin to breaking one or all of the Ten Commandments,
[if
liberals believed in the Ten Commandments.]
The only pure thoughts are liberal thoughts.” This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I picked some purely for their goofiness. Actually, some of the above are downright docile compared to what one can find while searching Ken's writings. It seems that any group or person that disagrees with Ken Hughes or with Conservative or Republican ideals, values, and/or philosophy is a lesser being, a wimp, an unintelligent person, a traitor, a hateful non-American, an atheist [is that a derogatory term??] and/or, ironically enough, intolerant. As for those that are really not Americans, well, you are beneath our God-guided greatness. Sometimes Ken does have an insightful piece, and sometimes I even agree with him, but tolerance just is not a word I'd use to describe him. Ken sometimes will refrain from trashing another useless-knowledge.com writer unless he's mentioned first. He does, however, slam groups and entire countries liberally [pun intended]. To my way of thinking, pissing off an entire group is a bigger wrong than pissing off an individual. Many UK writers disagree, and if I were a shrewd politician, I'd take this into consideration for my own writing; but, I'm not so I won't. I'm well aware that I engage in Ken's style from time to time, and enjoy a colorful article. Perhaps the difference is that I don't claim to take the higher ground. I claim the opposite - I'll gladly take the lower ground when I feel it's required. Nevertheless, in a very small way we are kindred spirits. We both have a slew of issues that get us worked up enough to show our fangs. I take a risk saying this – others have attempted to consider themselves similar to Ken only to be lambasted by him for it in his typical intolerant style. Oh well, that's all part of the fun ;) Mehry Christmas I say, one and all, Harry Christmas! ------------ About the author Frederick Smith: I enjoy writing about the positive virtues of humanism - humanists are the good guys. I now have a blog that I will start to increasingly maintain and update. Here is the link: fredsuberview.blogspot.com/ This is my second foray into the UK writing discordia. This time around, I want to be a tad more raw - maybe a bit edgier (does that sound "art-see"?) Maybe I'll address even more issues that most Americans consider taboo... About my personal background and life: I was born, I got some education, worked, ate, and had some kids. It seems I like to write something that was unknown to me until relatively recently...How's that for detail? ;) Hate mail is welcome unless you are from the Army Of God. Please! It's not that I mind seeing pictures of aborted fetuses in my inbox, but once you've seen one you've pretty much seen them all...
