Dolphins Vs. Bills

By Michelle Malsbury
Dec. 4, 2005

On the eve of December 3rd my husband and I attended a soiree/benefit for a young woman that has had the misfortune of getting cancer, not once, but twice. She is only 36. IT was a dock party at the Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove, FL. It was a progressive dinner party where we began with appetizers and beer and wine on one pier and then made the segway to another pier for the main courses, music, silent auction, and raffle.

During the course of the evening we had occasion to meet with the woman that was being heralded, Kelly. She is a first class sailor, single-handing almost around the world on her 30 foot Columbia sloop. She was a delightful, petite thing with the energy and vivacity of the brightest star. Tonight she would really shine!

My husband is an avid Dolphin's fan and bid for a couple of tickets to the Dolphins game on December 4th against the Buffalo Bills. The bid began at $175 and settled at $225 for two. Game time was for 1pm the following day. He was estatic, I was not so enthralled.

The party was a huge success bringing in over $5,000 to help Kelly relax, free her schedule from not working the three usual jobs while she completes her chemotherapy and radiation therapy. All were pleased!

On Sunday we embarked on our trek to the Dolphins stadium and easily found the section we were supposed to park in. We parked and began to walk toward the gates-according to our tickets we could enter anything between B and H. We entered B because it was closest to where we parked. However, it was on the exact opposite end of where we were supposed to sit. Section 143, row 8 (which was on the 50 yard line!) seats 9 and 10. We walked around until we saw our section and decided to locate our seats prior to game time. They were great seats!!!

The game began and in the first three minutes or so the Bills scored 21 points! WOW, right? Yea, we said the same. It appeared that the Dolphins could do just about nothing right for the remainder of that half and the Bills could do no wrong. Finally, the Dolphins managed to eek out 3 points from who knows where saving them from being skunked!

Half time came and went. The most memorable portion thus far had been when the Air National Guard did a double fly-by just prior to the start of the game. Pat also thought the cheerleaders were quite cute and memorable, I had no opinion there.

The second half kicked off and still the Dolphins struggled for each inch they could gain on the field. IT was pathetic to watch and many people left at the end of the third quarter. We almost did too. Die-hard fans were booing. Their spirits were at an all time low as this game looked like a regular shut out for the poorly playing Dolphins. A couple of time-outs later and the Dolphins had made some real progress. The score was 23 Bills and 17 Dolphins. I turned to Pat and said at the 10 minute mark we should leave to miss the major traffic jams from game end. He agreed. We began to leave as the Dolphins began to realize that this game was not quite over yet. They began to play like they actually knew what they were doing. They gained yardage and even caught a few passes near the end zone.

We walked down the walkway slowly watching the passing television screens along the way. Over the loud speakers we could hear the game play by play until we reached our car. We got inside and Pat searched for the local station to hear the remainder of the game. He couldn't find it so I hit the search keys until we got the final few minutes of game play. Pat took his time driving out the winding parking areas and onto the highway that led to the turnpike and home for us.

We just made the exit ramp for the turnpike south. We heard the crowd roar and cheer. Two minutes till game end the Dolphins pulled out a couple of plays that changed the landscape of this game. With something like 32 seconds they managed to tie the game and kick one in for the tie breaker! We were floored and Pat was a little miffed that I had asked him to leave before the end of the game.

I confess that I am not really a sports fan and I was less than thrilled to be going to this game in the first place. Truth be known, I was a little sorry that I begged Pat to leave prior to game end when all of the good things took place in the final couple minutes. As soon as he got home and turned on the next game he forgot that I had asked him to leave at a crucial time and cheered for the next team.

The lesson there is that the game is not over until it is over! Go Dolphins!
