Dec. 4, 2005 When people go shopping they are attracted to what looks appealing. If , for example, a piece of clothing looks like something a prospective shopper could visualise herself/himself in, he or she holds it up against his body to see how it might look. And if they want an even closer feel for the piece of merchandise, such item is taken to the dressing room so the customer can try it on. But upon purchasing an item such as a book, unless one is familiar with what he is looking for on arriving at the nearest bookstore, he ends up judging the book according to the cover. Let’s say for example, a book buyer walks in to a bookstore to look for something new to read. And certainly, he might pick up a book or two and read the synopsis of the book’s contents that’s on the back cover or even scan a few of the pages to see if the book he is holding would be something he would be interested in reading. But what motivated him into picking up the book in the first place? Especially if that book happens to be by an author the book buyer has not heard of before, better known as an unknown. The appealing image on the cover, of course. And it goes way beyond being in the physical bookstore also. When people are shopping online, they too are looking at what they find attractive and appealing, even if they are looking up a book by a published author with whose works they are already familiar, or happen to come across one by a newly published author by accident. Like maybe the customer was looking up a certain book by some one else and just happened to spot the one by the unknown because it was listed along with the others. But it was the appealing book cover again that motivated the shopper to take a second glance at the book by the unknown author. There is nothing wrong with purchasing something based on visual appeal, people have been doing just that for quite a few decades, and they, the shoppers have every right to make sure what they are buying is worth their while, after all, it’s their hard earned money. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
