Dec. 2, 2005 If you are accustomed to keeping things clean and neat, the mere sight of a stack of dirty dishes in the kitchen sink might motivate you into attempting to clean those dishes or at least load them into the dishwasher, or clear an untidy living room, coffee table or whatever it is that makes you feel uncomfortable. But here’s some startling information that will make the neatest of persons, (myself included) cringe. According to recently conducted research from Kingston University in the United Kingdom, an unmade bed is one of the better ways to ward off dust mites and other allergens associated with asthma and allergies. Especially since, there are 1.5 million dust mites found on a made bed. Furthermore, when a bed is made, it keeps moisture in the sheets and mattresses, which are ideal conditions for those dust mites. But leave your bed unmade after you get up in the morning and those conditions won’t be present, and since dust mites are the number one cause of allergens and asthma, keeping your bed unmade can leave you feeling healthier, especially if you are a frequent sufferer of allergens or asthma. Here’s another factor from the same study. House dust mites, which are less than a millimeter or 0.0394 of an inch long nourish themselves by living off the scales of human skin and make allergens that we inhale during sleep. And while we sleep, the bed becomes warm and damp, thus making it ideal for dust mites to grow and multiply. So leaving your bed unmade during the day can alleviate the area of moisture, and since dust mites need moisture in order to survive, if there’s no moisture in the unmade bed, those dust mites will eventually die. Now leaving your bed unmade alone will not eradicate the dust mite problem, but it will help alleviate some of them.
